Recently I had the pleasure of meeting a woman that gave me a new perspective about things we often take for granted. She described how she invited some people over to her house for supper…people who may not have known where their next meal might come from.
As my friend prepared the meal, she glanced over at her old and worn dining room table; what once had a beautiful dark wood finish now had some worn spots. That drew her attention to the age and flaws of her furniture and a mental note of repairs to be made.
The friends came, the meal shared along with good conversation.. As the group were sitting together at the table, one of her guests ran his hands over the table on the exact spots she had worried about earlier.
He exclaimed, “This is golden!”
From that moment forward, my friend decided never to restore that spot on the table…that worn area that brought good friends together for a shared meal.
It makes me wonder how many of our worn places - the ones we’re most tempted to hide—are the very places others find most beautiful.
